CommVault, EMC, Symantec lead European data protection and recovery software market, says IDC
Other vendors examined by IDC include Acronis, ASG Software Solutions (formerly Atempo), CA Technologies, Dell (formerly Quest Software), HP, IBM and Veeam.
Data protection and recovery involve the salvaging of data from a failed, damaged, corrupted or inaccessible data storage medium when it cannot be accessed normally. IDC explained that the market in Europe is driven primarily by incumbent vendors, although they are being challenged by disruptive technologies such as server virtualization, disk-based backup and cloud services.
IDC advised European enterprises considering data protection and recovery software products to move toward a platform approach to data protection. "Instead of managing point products for each storage-related task (backup, archiving, replication, etc.), it is more efficient to design data management services that take into account performance, availability, and retention requirements, and manage data accordingly," IDC explained.
Enterprises should consider data protection a component of their software-defined data center strategy. "Data protection needs to become a service under a data management service catalogue that manages data backup and retention according to defined service levels for business processes," IDC advised.
In addition, enterprises should investigate alternative delivery models, such as the cloud. "Cloud storage is rapidly maturing into a valid alternative to traditional on-premises deployment models. Appliances are also increasingly popular as a delivery model, and many organizations benefit from this acquiring storage software in the appliance form factor," IDC noted.
